In Between Places: Hong Kong Women Artists in the UKA Contemporary Art Exhibition Exploring Cultural Identity, Memory, and Creative Belonging

In Between Places: Hong Kong Women Artists in the UK is a new contemporary art exhibition running from 27 to 30 May 2025 at Kingswood Arts, Palm Court. Free and open to the public, the exhibition presents a thoughtful and timely collection of works by six women artists originally from Hong Kong, now based in the UK. Together, they reflect on cultural transition, memory, identity, and creativity through photography, installation, painting, moving image, and performance.

Curated by Rachel, Hiu Yin IP — an experienced artist and researcher with a deep commitment to cultural narratives and art education. Before relocating to the UK, she taught in the Creative Arts Department at a university in Hong Kong. Now based in Southwark, where she has been happily living for the past two years, Rachel is passionate about using this exhibition as a way to build connections and foster dialogue with the local community through shared artistic experiences.

The exhibition brings together a group of established and experienced artists who have played active roles in Hong Kong’s contemporary art scene. Now continuing their practices in the UK, they explore the emotional and cultural space of being “in between” — navigating new surroundings while staying rooted in the histories and sensibilities that shaped them. Featured artists include Wai Kit Lam, Grace Ying Mui Tang, Twodogs Ho (SeemanHo), Rachel Hiu Yin IP, Pei Lam, and Winky Sze-Wai Chan.

In Between Places invites audiences to reflect on how personal identity shifts through physical and cultural movement. The works respond to themes such as domestic life, adaptation, language, and colonial memory — and highlight the role of creativity in making sense of change. The exhibition opens with a reception on Tuesday 27 May from 5 to 7pm, including an artist-led tour at 5:30pm followed by a live performance. It remains open daily from 10am to 6pm through 30 May at Kingswood Arts, Palm Court, Seeley Drive, SE21 8QN, just a short walk from Sydenham Hill Station.

At a time when cultural connections between Hong Kong and communities across the UK are becoming increasingly present, In Between Places provides a timely platform for engagement and exchange. It offers a space for audiences to encounter personal stories through art, and to reflect on shared experiences of movement, belonging, and reinvention.

Presented by Women Art Creative, a UK-based platform supporting women artists from diverse backgrounds, this exhibition brings forward underrepresented voices and encourages meaningful community dialogue through artistic expression.
